Over the past 2 weeks I put all of my fitness needs into the hands of the Peloton app. Prior to the pandemic I was a gym lover; a regular at LA fitness. I’ve been going there for over 10 years. Cycling quickly became one of my favorite classes to take there but thanks to the pandemic I have been exploring the world of home fitness. I tried Peloton classes for 2 weeks and this has been my experience.
Currently gyms are either shut down or have restrictions on the number of people who can attend and there’s a requirement to wear a mask. Honestly, the thought of going to the gym right now makes me uncomfortable. I’d rather not be around people if I don’t have to be. To supplement the gym I have done Youtube workouts, jogging, walking and outdoor bike riding. But now that we’re in the height of the winter and almost a year into this pandemic lock down I needed a change so I decided to give Peloton a try.
I was in the market for a cardio machine around the holidays. I looked at climbers, ellipticals, treadmills and spin bikes. Peloton bikes come with a price tag between $1900 and $2500. Thankfully Youtube helped me decide on the much more affordable Sunny Health & Fitness cycling bike. There’s a Peloton hack trending in the YouTube fitness world and I decided to try it out.
How much does the app cost?
After putting my bike together and getting a few additional gadgets I was ready for Peloton. I downloaded the app and signed up for a free 2 month trial. Once the trial ends it will cost $12.99 per month compared to $39 per month if you own the Peloton bike. They offer classes for strength, yoga and cardio to name a few. In 2 weeks I have taken 6 cycling classes and 5 off bike classes. They try to make it a one stop shop for all fitness needs and they do a great job at it.
So far my favorite cycling instructor is Alex Toussaint. He plays mostly hip-hop in his classes and his energy and spirit are amazing. I took a class with Ally Love called Sundays with Love. Words can’t describe how motivated and empowered I felt after taking her class. Off the bike I did a couple of cardio HIIT classes and my favorite instructor, so far, is Rebecca Kennedy. She kicks my butt every time and I feel accomplished just for finishing her classes.
So did I love it?
After trying Peloton for 2 weeks I am a believer. No, I did not lose weight if you really want to know. Eating plays a major part in that. But what they offer is a social and interactive platform that gives you no excuse not to get up and get it done. The hack is a great way to test it out before dishing out the money to buy the real thing. Will I continue using Peloton? Absolutely. Do I want to buy the real thing? Possibly. Doing Peloton for 2 weeks has me feeling excited for my next workout even with the anticipation of it kicking my butt.
