I Went on a Road Trip: Part II

Brionna Taylor Mural

I went on a road trip through the south and this is part 2 of my experience. In part 1 I left off telling you all about my take on the Cincinnati area. Make sure you go back and read all about it if you haven’t already.

Louisville, Kentucky

Next up on the trip was Louisville Kentucky. We only spent about a half of a day there in total. We visited Angel’s Envy distillery in downtown Louisville. We opted to try their bourbon and whiskey tasting experience which was very fun and informative. The host seemed to know everything there is to know about bourbon from its history down to the science of making it. Fun fact: Kentucky is the only place in the world where bourbon can legally be made so it’s kind of a big deal. You can go on tours at distilleries like Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Bulleit and so many more while visiting the bluegrass state. Before leaving Louisville we stopped to see the beautiful mural dedicated to Brionna Taylor (she lived in Louisville), George Floyd and other victims of police killings.

Memphis, Tennessee

Our next stop was Memphis, Tennessee. The drive from Louisville to Memphis was 6 hours. Naturally, we got some ribs as soon as we arrived! We ate at a restaurant right near Graceland (Elvis Presley’s Estate) called Marlowe’s. Marlowe’s was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. I recently watched the Memphis BBQ episode so it was a no brainer. Honestly, the ribs were a bit underwhelming but the service was great.

We started the next day

visiting the Lorraine Motel. Yes, the infamous site where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. Surreal is the best word that I can use to describe how it felt to be there. Standing in the same place where he took his final steps brought about so many emotions. From there we went to the Stax Museum of American Soul. It is a must see! The musical history of Memphis is so rich. Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and The Staple Singers were among many of the stars that made music there. We ended out day with taking a stroll down Beale street. Beal street has countless bars, restaurants and shops. I can only imagine that it’s an amazing place to hang out when there isn’t a pandemic going on.

Stay tuned for the final part of my road trip in New Orleans. There’s so much that I’m looking forward to sharing with you!
